Reflected Ceiling Plans for Bathrooms

A reflected ceiling plan (RCP) is a drawing of a room's ceiling, shown as if it were mirrored on the floor and viewed from above. For a bathroom it maps where the downlights, exhaust fan, heat lamp, any skylight and any bulkheads sit, with dimensions and ceiling heights, so the electrician, plumber and framer can each rough in without a site meeting or a call to the designer.
What a reflected ceiling plan actually is
A reflected ceiling plan (RCP) shows what is on the ceiling of a room, drawn as if you placed a mirror on the floor and looked down. On a bathroom ceiling, that means light fixtures, exhaust fans, heat lamps, skylights, bulkheads and any structural soffits.
Most builders get a bathroom floor plan and little else. Internal elevations are already uncommon on a bathroom job, and a reflected ceiling plan is rarer still, yet the ceiling is exactly where the electrician, the plumber and the framer all have to work. The RCP is the document that tells the electrician where the downlights go, the plumber where the exhaust terminates, and the framer where the bulkhead sits. Without it, each trade is guessing or calling the designer.
What appears on a bathroom RCP
A bathroom reflected ceiling plan typically shows:
- Downlights and other light fixtures, with their positions dimensioned from walls
- The exhaust fan, located over or near the shower or bath
- Heat lamps or combination units, if specified
- Skylights or roof windows, shown in their ceiling position, with the shaft or splay noted so the framer and the exhaust duct can work around them
- Bulkheads and soffits, drawn as a stepped or shaded zone showing the lower ceiling area
- The ceiling height or heights, including any step-down for a bulkhead
- Wet-area zones, sometimes noted for the electrician's reference
A good RCP does not just show symbols. It shows dimensions, heights and enough information for each trade to rough in without a site meeting.
Lights: placement matters more than style
Downlight placement in a bathroom is not purely aesthetic. Australian wiring rules (AS/NZS 3000) require light fittings to carry the correct IP (Ingress Protection) rating for their position. A fixture within 0.6 m of a fixed shower fitting on the ceiling needs a higher moisture rating than one on the far side of the room.
The RCP coordinates this. It shows where each light sits relative to the shower, which tells the electrician which IP rating applies and whether a downlight can be positioned over the shower at all. Getting it right at the documentation stage avoids rework when the lights are in and the inspector arrives.
For spacing, a standard 800-lumen LED downlight with a 100-degree beam angle typically sits about 1 m from the wall and 1.2 to 1.5 m from its neighbour. The RCP fixes this layout so the ceiling is patched and painted before the electrician returns for fitoff.
Exhaust: the NCC has specific requirements
Under NCC 2022, a bathroom exhaust system must move a minimum of 25 litres per second and discharge directly to outside, not into the roof space. A non-naturally ventilated bathroom also requires the exhaust to be interlocked with the light switch and fitted with a run-on timer that keeps the fan running after the light goes off (the NCC 2022 provisions specify a 10-minute run-on).
These rules mean the exhaust fan location, the duct path and the discharge point all need to be locked in before framing. The RCP shows where the fan sits on the ceiling. The elevation or section drawing shows the duct path. Without both documents, the builder is making decisions that should have been made at design.
Bulkheads: why they appear and what they mean
A bulkhead is a boxed-out drop in the ceiling, typically 200 to 400 mm deep. In a bathroom it almost always conceals something: a horizontal drain run in a multi-storey home, a rain shower supply line, exhaust ducting, or a structural beam.
The RCP shows the bulkhead as a stepped zone and notes the lowered ceiling height. This matters for the framer who builds it, the waterproofer who needs to treat any ceiling-to-wall junction, and the tiler who needs to know whether the tile line runs to the step or to the original ceiling.
If the bulkhead is not on the plan, each trade discovers it independently. The result is usually a conflict on site that costs time to resolve.
