Powder Room Design: Four Elevations, Every Wall Counted

Why Four Walls Matter in a Powder Room
A powder room is the smallest wet area in a house, typically between 1.5 and 2.5 square metres. That is exactly why every wall needs a working elevation before construction begins. There is no spare room to recover from a decision made on site.
Builders who work from a floor plan only get the positions of the pan and the basin. They do not get the heights, the tile patterns, the accessory locations, or how the door swing interacts with the vanity. Those details live on the elevations, and in a powder room each of the four walls carries at least one decision that affects the others.
The WC Wall
This is typically the wall the toilet pan is positioned against, or a side wall that defines the WC position. The elevation needs to show the pan, the cistern or in-wall cistern module, and the rough-in location for the inlet supply.
Key clearances to set before framing is locked in:
- Pan centreline must sit at least 450 mm from any side wall, giving a minimum 900 mm total width for the WC position (NCC Housing Provisions Part 10.4).
- 600 mm clear floor space must remain in front of the pan.
- Confirm the rough-in dimension from the pan specification sheet before the plumber sets the stack, as this varies by product.
If the client has chosen an in-wall cistern, the frame adds depth to the finished wall. Show that on the elevation and confirm the room depth still accommodates the basin and clearances in front of it.
The Vanity Wall
Powder room basins run from 400 mm wide for very tight spaces up to 600 mm where there is more room. A wall-hung vanity with a 400 mm projection leaves floor space visible underneath and reads as more generous than it is. Standard basin rim height is 850 mm from finished floor level.
The elevation should show:
- Basin width and projection from the wall
- Vanity cabinet height and the gap to the floor for wall-hung units
- Mirror or shaving cabinet: width, height, and position relative to the basin centre
- Mixer position, wall-mounted or deck-mounted, because this changes the rough-in location and the tile grid behind it
The mirror tends to set the visual centre of the room. Lock in its size on the elevation early so the tiler knows the tile grid behind the vanity does not produce a sliver cut right where the eye goes.
The Entry Wall
The entry wall holds the door, the light switch, and sometimes a hook or ring. It looks simple, but the door swing is the detail that causes problems in small rooms.
The elevation should confirm:
- Door swing direction and whether it clears the pan and vanity in the full-open position
- Switch plate position, to avoid conflict with door trim or tile feature bands
- Any robe hook or towel ring location and height so the electrician and tiler know what is going on that wall
If the door swings inward and the room is short, the 600 mm clear zone in front of the pan gets tight. Resolve it at the design stage: a sliding or cavity door is a common fix and it shows up on the elevation before anyone has started framing.
The Feature Wall
In a powder room, there is often one wall that carries no fixture. Designers treat it as the feature wall: the place for a bold tile choice, a wall niche if the dimensions allow, or an uninterrupted surface that makes the room feel considered.
Even a blank wall needs an elevation. The tiler needs to know:
- Whether the tile runs floor to ceiling or stops at a dado line
- If a niche or shelf is planned, its position, width, depth and height, so the framer can set the stud and the waterproofer knows where the membrane needs to go
A niche must align to the tile module. That calculation has to happen before the framer sets the stud, not after the tiler arrives. The elevation is where that coordination happens. A 600 x 300 mm niche dropped into a 150 x 150 mm tile grid without that planning will cut on at least two sides.
Locking It In Before Tiling
The four elevations of a powder room form a complete working picture of what the tiler, plumber, and electrician each need. Decisions about large-format tiles in a narrow room, the position of the mixer, the depth of the niche, the door clearance: none of those can be made safely on site without drawings to work from.
A powder room is small enough that one wrong call on site affects everything else in the room. Drawings move those decisions to the right place, before materials are cut.
